Be Familiar With the Biochemical Oxygen Demand Index in Water
Date:2025-06-06 Browse: 2

Some common indicators in online water quality monitoring can be classified into organic chemical indicators, inorganic chemical indicators, physical indicators, and common metal indicators, among which BOD belongs to organic chemical indicators.

Biochemical oxygen Demand, abbreviated as BOD, refers to the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed in the biochemical reaction process when microorganisms decompose some biodegradable organic matter present in water under certain conditions. Meanwhile, it is also an important indicator in online water quality monitoring.

BOD is actually a comprehensive indicator used to reflect the degree of organic pollution in water bodies, and it studies the biodegradability of wastewater and the effect of biochemical treatment. It is an important parameter for the detection of biochemical treatment wastewater!

Under the action of organic matter microorganisms, aerobic decomposition can be roughly divided into the following two stages:

1.The oxidation stage of carbon-containing substances mainly involves the oxidation of carbon-containing organic substances into CO2 and H2O.

2.During the nitrification stage, it mainly involves the decomposition of nitrogen organic compounds into nitrite and nitrate under the action of nitrifying bacteria. It will take about 5 to 7 days for obvious reactions to occur. The currently commonly used BOD5 method for determining BOD values generally does not include the nitrification stage.

Of course, if the biochemical oxygen demand in water is to be detected, a BOD rapid detector must be used. The content of BOD in water can be detected by this instrument to determine the water quality!
