Where Does the Oily Wastewater Come From?

Testing the oil content in water is also indispensable. So, in what industries is it necessary to test for oil in water? Where does the oily wastewater mainly come from? In this article, let’s take a look at the main sources of oil in wastewater together.

Oily wastewater mainly comes from some industrial sectors such as stone chemical engineering, steel, and mechanical processing. Among the oil pollutants in the wastewater, the relative density of some heavy tar is above 1.1, while that of the others is below 1. This oily substance can exist in three states!

1) The droplet size of the floating oil should be greater than 100µm, and it is relatively easy to separate it from the wastewater.

2) Dispersed oil, the droplet size of this oil is between 10 and 100µm and it will linger in water.

3) Emulsified oil, whose concentration is different from the above two types, is less than 10µm, making it very difficult to separate from wastewater.

The concentration of wastewater discharged varies among different departments. For instance, wastewater produced during the oil refining process has an oil content ranging from 150 to 1000mg/L, while the tar content in coking wastewater is approximately 500 to 800mg/ L. There are also differences among other departments, so we won’t elaborate on each one here. It is precisely for this reason that the treatment of oily wastewater requires the use of oil separators to recover floating oil or heavy oil. Another issue is that emulsified and dispersed oil in wastewater is difficult to handle. What we need to do is to prevent or reduce the occurrence of emulsification. There are two treatment methods. One is to reduce the emulsification of oil in the wastewater during the production process. Secondly, minimize the frequency of pumping wastewater as much as possible to prevent an increase in the degree of emulsification.

May I ask what instrument can be used to detect the concentration of oil in water? Real-time detection of oil in water can be carried out through an online oil analyzer in water. In addition, if you need to know more about the related equipment for online monitoring of medical wastewater, process water and drinking water, you can also ask Modi.
