The permanganate index is one of the important indicators for detecting the water quality. It is a commonly used indicator reflecting the pollution of organic and inorganic oxidizable substances in water bodies. Its definition is: under certain conditions, potassium permanganate is used to oxidize some organic matter and inorganic reducing substances in the water sample, and the equivalent oxygen amount is calculated based on the consumption of potassium permanganate.

After the sample is filtered, it is sent to the digestion tank. Meanwhile, the water quality analyzer controls the heating device for heating. In the digestion tank, potassium permanganate and concentrated sulfuric acid are added in sequence and digested at 100°C. The digestion time can be selected according to the original water quality. After the digested sample has undergone an appropriate cooling period, optical detection is conducted by measuring the absorbance to calculate the permanganate index concentration of the water to be tested.

 

Matters Needing Attention During the Water Quality Detection Process

The instrument requires preheating after startup. Forcibly skipping and directly measuring will affect the measurement accuracy;

A colorimetric tube without obvious scratches should be selected for measurement. The colorimetric tube should be used and placed with caution, handled gently and placed carefully to avoid scratches, abrasions or stains on the colorimetric bottle, otherwise the performance of the instrument will be severely affected. The solutions for calibration and measurement should be pipetted, digested and cooled in the same batch;

The digested solution should be calibrated and measured as soon as possible to prevent errors caused by the decomposition of potassium permanganate.
