First off, before we dive into that, let’s clarify the difference between “monitoring” and “testing.” Monitoring refers to long‑term observation of water conditions to track real‑time variations. Testing, on the other hand, means measuring specific water quality parameters to verify compliance with relevant standards. Today, we will go through the basic knowledge of Medical Wastewater Monitoring and testing.

 

For complex sites such as hospitals, wastewater treatment monitoring plays an important role to ensure all indicators meet requirements. Relevant details are as follows:

  1. Monitoring frequency for hospital wastewater: Hospitals handling tuberculosis or infectious disease cases shall conduct monitoring no less than 6 times per year. Other hospitals shall perform monitoring no less than 4 times per year.
  2. Core monitoring parameters: Fecal coliform and total residual chlorine. (The WECT‑900 Online Fecal Coliform Analyzer and RCl900 Online Total Residual Chlorine Analyzer can be applied for the above two indicators respectively.)

 

Routine testing of hospital wastewater treatment is also a responsibility of hospitals, with test items and frequency subject to regulatory requirements:

  1. Total residual chlorine: For wastewater from continuous treatment systems, this parameter shall be tested no less than twice per day. For wastewater from batch treatment systems, testing shall be carried out prior to each discharge.
  2. Fecal coliform: As a bacterial indicator, it shall be tested at least once per month.

In general, the purpose of Medical Wastewater Monitoring and testing is to achieve safe discharge and reduce pollution risks to water bodies and soil. This principle also applies to domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, industrial process water and other scenarios requiring water quality analysis.
