Continuous Monitoring of Chromium in Electroplating Wastewater
Date:2026-07-10 Browse: 5

Chromium, a prevalent heavy metal in daily life, is widely involved in scientific research and industrial wastewater discharge, particularly in electroplating effluent. This paper offers a concise overview of continuous Water Quality Monitoring for chromium in electroplating wastewater.

Monitoring Methods

For hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) monitoring, acid oxidation, masking of interfering ions, and specific chromogenic reagent-based colorimetry are commonly employed. The operational principle is as follows: the pretreated water sample is introduced into a cuvette, followed by the addition of a masking agent to eliminate interfering substances. After adjusting the solution pH to an optimal range, a specific chromogenic reagent is added to trigger a color reaction. Since the extent of color change is proportional to the Cr⁶⁺ concentration in water, the Cr⁶⁺ content can be determined by measuring the solution’s color variation. For total chromium (TCr) detection, after pretreatment, an oxidizing agent is added to convert all chromium valence states to Cr⁶⁺, followed by colorimetric analysis.

Key Considerations in Online Monitoring

During online monitoring, wastewater quality and environmental conditions directly impact measurement accuracy. Online Water Quality Analyzers operate based on pre-set internal sampling and analysis protocols, and sample coloration can cause significant deviations from true values, reducing measurement precision. To mitigate the effect of coloration, Director Gong proposed periodic zero-point calibration using colored production wastewater, or preparation of full-process standard solutions with the same color intensity as the sample (instead of Cr⁶⁺ solutions), combined with zero-reset processing during calculations. Additionally, both chromogenic time and temperature during Cr⁶⁺ monitoring exert substantial influences on measurement results.

Monitoring Equipment

The T8000-Cr Online Water Chromium Analyzer is recommended for monitoring chromium content in wastewater, ensuring accurate detection of chromium levels. This device features fully automated operation (eliminating the need for constant supervision) and an adjustable quantitative sampling system, allowing precise regulation of reagent dosage and sample volume to ensure accurate monitoring of chromium content in water samples.
