How to Solve the Problem of Substandard Biological Nitrogen Removal in Winter?

When it comes to the issue of biological denitrification, environmental conditions can affect the work of biological denitrification! In winter, biological nitrogen removal may not meet the standards. What should be done about this?

In this article, we will explore the solutions together with the manufacturer of online water quality monitoring instruments. It can be analyzed through four situations.

Heating. The solutions for heating situations are quite limited. In northern China, the following measures are commonly used:

1) Insulate the walls of some tanks such as aeration tanks and secondary sedimentation tanks with foamed insulation boards, and do a good job in insulation by using the outer brick maintenance structure and the tank top cover.

2) Set up an air preheating chamber on one side of the blower to preheat the sub-zero temperature in winter to a suitable temperature. Additionally, set up a pipe gallery for the air pipeline to facilitate insulation treatment work.

3) Heat the sludge appropriately, including the returned sludge;

4) Heat the sewage entering the aeration tank through hot steam.

However, one point to note is that all the above-mentioned methods will add certain costs to the operation of sewage treatment (including online water quality monitoring work)!

Increase the sludge age and MLSS. In fact, if the sludge age is increased, it mainly manifests as an increase in MLSS. In winter, the proliferation of organisms is relatively slow, and nitrifying bacteria, as autotrophic bacteria, are even slower. At this time, increasing the sludge age can keep nitrifying bacteria within a certain range and also appropriately increase the sludge concentration. Rather, it can maintain the total sludge metabolic capacity at a stable state even when the bacterial metabolic capacity declines.

What is biological immobilization? It must be biological fillers!

After immobilization treatment, the stress resistance of microorganisms will be enhanced, and they will have a certain tolerance to changes in the external environment, thus maintaining their high activity. In addition, after being embedded and fixed, the retention capacity of microorganisms will be enhanced, enabling the rapid start-up of the reactor and its efficient and stable operation. Immobilization can also weaken the effect of temperature changes, which will have a certain impact on nitrification.

The issue of domestication.

When it comes to domestication, it is essentially the long-term treatment of microbial communities in a designated environment by humans, while also constantly transplanting and passing on species. It is a method to accumulate and select suitable spontaneous mutants. The application of the domestication denitrification process needs to be carried out in a low-temperature environment, so that the enzymes and lipid composition of the cell membrane in the microorganisms can be adapted to the low-temperature environment and can exert their characteristics under such conditions.
