Wastewater Monitoring Requirements in Medical Wastewater Treatment Technologies
Date:2026-09-21 Browse: 8

Medical wastewater poses significant environmental and public health challenges due to its high concentration of toxic and hazardous contaminants. While untreated discharge can cause severe contamination of soil and groundwater systems, the complexity of treating such waste presents substantial operational difficulties. In accordance with regulations established by relevant Chinese authorities, optimizing medical wastewater treatment processes is critical. This article elucidates the wastewater monitoring requirements within medical wastewater treatment technologies, which can be systematically categorized into the following four aspects:

Compliance with Standardized Monitoring Protocols

Wastewater monitoring, data recording, preservation, and reporting must adhere strictly to relevant national standards. At medical wastewater treatment facilities, key monitoring parameters encompass both biological pollution indicators and general microbiological markers.

1.Physicochemical Indicators:

The monitoring of physicochemical parameters serves to evaluate the operational status and treatment efficiency of the wastewater system. These metrics are essential for ensuring stable system operation and compliance with effluent quality standards. Routine parameters monitored include Ammonia Nitrogen ($NH_3$-N), pH value, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).

2.Biological Pollutants:

Biological pollutants primarily consist of viruses, parasites, and bacteria. Fecal coliforms serve as the primary biological indicator in medical wastewater; however, some facilities may monitor *Escherichia coli* instead, depending on specific institutional requirements. For instance, Modi-Tech’s proprietary WECT-900 Online Fecal Coliform Analyzer facilitates real-time monitoring of fecal coliform levels. This enables continuous assessment of water quality fluctuations until discharge standards are met, thereby ensuring safe effluent release.

Water Sampling Procedures

Water samples must be collected specifically at the discharge outlet of the wastewater treatment process. Modi’s water quality monitoring equipment utilizes an automated pumping system to transfer water samples into the analytical instrument for processing and detection.

Monitoring Frequency Regulations

Daily monitoring of Total Residual Chlorine (TRC) and Fecal Coliforms is mandated. TRC levels must be measured no less than twice per day, while Fecal Coliform testing is required at least once per month. However, the precise frequency of monitoring is not rigidly fixed and should be adjusted based on the specific operational conditions and risk assessments of each facility.

Standardized Analytical Methods

Monitoring methods for various indicators shall conform to standard methods recognized by China’s environmental protection authorities. Alternatively, equivalent validated methods that meet regulatory acceptance criteria may also be employed.
