Such wastewater comes in multiple types and contains toxic‑harmful substances that are hard to purify. Apart from accumulating in organisms, it imposes significant aerobic effects on water bodies and leads to water quality deterioration. This paper discusses the impacts and treatment difficulties of chemical wastewater.
Scope of Impacts of Chemical Wastewater
The chemical industry covers a wide range of sectors, including acid‑alkali production, petrochemicals, plastics, detergent manufacturing and others. Wastewater is generated during production processes, such as process wastewater, equipment and site washing water, cooling water, etc. Variations across industries, raw materials, production processes and product types greatly influence wastewater output, pollutant categories and pollutant concentrations.
Key Difficulties in Chemical Wastewater Treatment
Three major challenges are summarized as follows:
1) The chemical manufacturing process consumes large volumes of water for both production processes and cooling purposes. Outdated production technologies and aging equipment may result in excessive water consumption, poor separation of clean and polluted streams, and low water recycling efficiency.
2) Chemical wastewater is characterized by complex water quality and high pollutant concentrations prior to treatment.
3) Most pollutants contained in the wastewater are toxic, such as heavy metals.
In addition to wastewater disinfection treatment, Wastewater Monitoring is essential. It measures various harmful substance indicators in water to verify whether the treated effluent meets relevant discharge standards.
