Water is a vital resource for humans, animals, and plants, serving as an indispensable foundation for daily life and industrial production. The quality of drinking water directly impacts human health, necessitating rigorous disinfection, sterilization, and quality testing to ensure safety. Some may assume water quality testing relies solely on specialized equipment, but this is only one category of methods. Below are several simple, preliminary assessment techniques suitable for on-site or household screening:

1.Visual Suspended Solids Detection

Transfer the water sample to a high-transparency glass container, allow it to stand undisturbed for 3 hours, then observe against a light source. The presence of sediment indicates severe (exceed of standards) for suspended solids.

2.Trigonometrical Residual Chlorine Assessment

Collect a water sample in a cup and detect odors. A distinct chlorine (bleach-like) smell suggests excessive residual chlorine in tap water.

3.Gustatory Residual Chlorine Verification

After boiling the water, taste it. A persistent bleach-like flavor confirms residual chlorine, rendering the water unfit for direct consumption without further treatment.

Brew tea with boiled tap water and let it stand overnight. Darkening of the tea infusion indicates potential of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in the water.

4.Gustatory Hardness Evaluation

Assess the mouthfeel of the water. A(astringent) taste typically signals high water hardness.

5.Scale Deposition for Hardness Confirmation

Inspect the inner walls of a kettle used for boiling tap water. Thick yellowish scale deposits are a direct indicator of excessive water hardness.

These methods are practical for preliminary home-based assessments in the absence of professional instruments. However, tap water is subject to centralized treatment and monitoring by water utilities: before distribution, water treatment plants conduct standardized treatment and use professional Water Quality Analyzers to verify compliance with all parameters. Despite this, occasional may still occur due to factors such as pipeline corrosion during transportation or over-disinfection processes.
