Can Coliform Bacteria, like Escherichia coli, also Control Water Pollution?

In our human intestinal tract, the E. coli bacteria have been modified. It is capable of dealing with copper ion pollution in water. Why can this bacterium, which can cause diseases in humans, be used for water pollution control?

According to our understanding, another name for E. coli is Escherichia coli. It is a very common type of bacteria found in the intestines of humans and animals, and it proliferates abundantly in the intestines. For E. coli, it can survive under normal copper ion concentrations and then through its natural advantages, design a system, so that it can modify the E. coli in the natural environment and adsorb the copper ions in water pollution, thereby reducing and precipitating the copper.

So, can the coliform group, like E. coli, also control water pollution? Are they the same concept? Of course not! The coliform group is widely distributed in feces and places where humans frequently move, and the pollution of feces to the external environment is mainly the reason for the existence of coliform bacteria in nature. In feces, the typical E. coli is dominant, while in the external environment, there are more forms of coexistence of coliform bacteria and others. In the indicators for monitoring medical wastewater, there will be coliform bacteria, and by detecting coliform bacteria, the situation of water pollution can be judged.

Water is an indispensable resource in our lives, but at the same time, it is also an important medium for spreading intestinal diseases. For example, coliform bacteria. It is regarded as a basic infectious bacterial group, and the value of coliform bacteria can indicate the pollution of the water body and indirectly indicate the possibility of the presence of intestinal bacteria. The total number of bacteria in water reflects the degree of bacterial pollution of the water body, but the total number of bacteria cannot indicate the source of pollution. Therefore, it is more appropriate to monitor coliform bacteria to determine the source and safety level of water pollution.

Of course, there are not only the coliform bacteria as the only indicator for judging water pollution conditions. Take medical wastewater as an example, in addition to coliform bacteria, there are also indicators such as total residual chlorine, COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen that need to be detected. And the bacterial inspection mainly includes coliform bacteria and total bacterial number, etc.

The instrument that can detect coliform bacteria in water is called the “WECT-900 Coliform Group Online Analyzer“. This instrument uses the enzyme-substrate method to monitor the number of coliform bacteria in wastewater in real time. Thus, through this data, the situation of water pollution can be judged.
