Application Issues of Chlorine Dioxide Disinfection in Industrial Wastewater

Among various classifications of chlorine-containing disinfectants, chlorine dioxide disinfectant is relatively favored. Compared with other chlorine disinfectants, it exhibits lower risks in multiple aspects. This article, in collaboration with Modi, focuses on exploring the application issues of chlorine dioxide disinfection in industrial wastewater.  

 

Chlorine dioxide is widely applied across diverse industries, including the disinfection of cooling towers. When dosed into water, chlorine dioxide disinfects the circulating water in cooling towers, primarily aiming to remove accumulated biofilms and prevent future biofilm formation. For cooling towers, biofilm removal is of great significance: it ensures that pipes and equipment within the towers are not corroded or damaged, thereby improving the pumping efficiency of the cooling system. Additionally, chlorine dioxide disinfection effectively eliminates bacteria in water, ensuring water quality safety.

The popularity of chlorine dioxide is well-founded, as evidenced by its inherent advantages. Chlorine dioxide is highly soluble in water across the entire range of ambient water temperatures. Moreover, its disinfection efficacy remains stable regardless of fluctuations in water pH, allowing for continuous disinfection over several days. These properties grant it distinct advantages over conventional chlorine disinfectants. Nevertheless, caution must be exercised during its application: chlorine dioxide gas, if stored in its gaseous form, poses significant hazards, necessitating strict adherence to proper safety protocols. Additionally, accurate control of concentration levels is imperative prior to and during disinfection operations.

 

It is important to note that after water treatment with either chlorine-based or chlorine dioxide disinfectants, operators are required to monitor and manage the total residual chlorine content in water using online total residual chlorine analyzers. This ensures that residual chlorine levels do not exceed the standard threshold, which could otherwise pose risks to human health. Such analyzers are primarily employed in scenarios such as  Medical Wastewater Online Monitoring and Drinking Water Quality surveillance.
